In 2020, Daniel Silver spent several days observing the acclaimed S-E-D – Sharon Eyal Dance Company during rehearsals in Bern, Switzerland, producing a series of watercolours that captured not only physical movement but also the intensity of collective presence, the relationships between bodies in space, and those fleeting moments when choreography seems to transcend the physical. These observations became the catalyst for a new body of oil-painted ceramic sculptures, first presented at Fruitmarket Gallery Edinburgh in 2022.For People, Silver presents the next chapter of this ongoing investigation. The exhibition includes, for the first time, the life-sized, bronze-painted sculpture Blue Standing figure ( people ) installed outside the gallery, alongside a group of smaller bronze-painted dancer sculptures developed in the studio following his collaboration with the company. These are shown together with the watercolours made during the rehearsals, allowing visitors to trace the evolution of the work from direct observation to sculptural form.
PEOPLE
The exhibition takes its title from the shared experience that lies at the heart of the work. During the rehearsals, Silver witnessed how choreography dissolves the boundaries between individuals, creating a temporary community in which bodies move with a shared rhythm, intention and emotional intensity. Rather than portraying isolated figures, the works explore how human connection emerges through movement, revealing moments of vulnerability, empathy and belonging. Across watercolour and sculpture, People reflects on the profoundly social nature of the body, suggesting that identity is formed not only through the self but through our relationships with others.
Silver’s work often unfolds like an archaeological site or psychological landscape, where bodies, ruins and architectural fragments coexist in states of vulnerability and reconstruction. Drawing on antiquity, modernism, archaeology and Freudian psychoanalytic theory, he creates sculptures that appear simultaneously ancient and contemporary, excavated and unfinished. Through fragmentation and repetition, his figures embody emotional and psychological states rather than fixed identities, questioning how history, mythology and personal memory shape human experience.
Daniel Silver lives and works in London. Recent solo exhibitions include Uncanny Valley at Frith Street Gallery, London (2024), and The Walking Moon at Time Traveller, Sweden (2023). He has exhibited at Camden Arts Centre, London; NEON Foundation, Athens; The Hepworth Wakefield; and London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE. Daniel Silver is represented by Frith Street Gallery.
